When you load the first page of our web site you may be unpleasantly greeted with a brief notice asking if you want to allow the use of ActiveX Controls. This warning is produced because we use ActiveX and Java Script to accomplish a number of small effects such as buttons that activate when you "roll over" them. It is safe to accept the use of controls, but if you are uncomfortable with doing so everything will still work without the effects. You may, however, see these warnings over and over again, which can be a nuicance.

Tools
In building this web site we used a number of technologies, but the primary work was done on Adobe Macromedia Dreamweaver, a popular web design tool. As mentioned elsewhere, we used Adobe Photoshop as our graphics design tool and as a tool to modify existing photographs to our newer standards. These two tools are certainly mainstream development programs that should generate information in a format that is compatibel with most, if not all, browsers.
Page Elements
As mentioned above, it is almost impossible to create a web site today with complex data and not have some elements that browsers want approval to run. We use two of the most common ActiveX Controls, Java or Java Script. These embedded scripts allow us to display data in a way that reduces effort on your part as the reader, but also allows us to link to large quantities of data and present them in a way that fits in with genealogical research.
For example, we have large numbers of photographs from cemeteries that will be stored by type, name, and date. This information needs to be searchable but we cannot make it searchable without adding additional information to each picture in a way that you can find it. So to accomplish this we use additional, complimentary tools that add in functionality and allow you to find what you want. |
